I’m a Summit County local and have been coming to the outlets for years. I come to Bath and Body Works for hand soaps and candles, not because I have to, but because I choose to. The 3 female employees who were on the floor this afternoon during my visit (around 2pm) may have just convinced me to never come in again. My friend and I were not greeted when we came in, despite all 3 girls being right up in the front by the door. That’s fine, not a deal breaker. But I couldn’t help but notice how gossipy the employees were being. I didn’t catch much of their conversation but I did hear enough to realize they were complaining about customers who didn’t understand their sale signs. Listen. I worked in retail up here for 5 years and I get it. Customers can get on your nerves. Complaining about it makes you feel better. Just don’t do it on the clock in front of *other customers*. When we needed help, we had to go to the front to get one of them each time. And each time I truly felt like they were mad that I was interrupting their conversation. When I was checking out, I had a small candle in my things. The cashier Kiana (her hair was blocking her name tag so I couldn’t see quite all of it) told me that the candle I chose was a tester candle. I shrugged and said ok. There was no “tester” sticker anywhere on the candle. I thought about it for a second and kind of laughed to myself, and I asked her why there are testers for candles when you can just take the lid off and smell whichever one you want? It was kind of a serious question, I just asked about something I didn’t understand. My cashier’s response was dripping with condescension. She explained that it’s hard to smell something though glass, and picked up one of my fragrances and shook it and said “like this” and repeated that you can’t smell through glass. I can’t believe she was acting like that toward me, so I said that I didn’t think she understood me, I am wondering why there was a candle not for sale because it was a tester, on a table of candles? The cashier next to her chimes in saying “those are so you can smell the products we have” OKAY yes I get the genius idea of having a tester. So I just said “forget I asked”. If this is the way B&BW trains their employees to act then I don’t ever plan on returning so I can be treated like an out of place, annoying kindergartner.
